PURPOSEFUL PATHWAYS: INSIGHTS FROM UMP FESTIVAL 2025
News Article

The energy from the UMP Festival in Mangochi (21–27 October 2025) still lingers. What began as a creative exploration transformed into a week of powerful lessons, meaningful connections, and deep reflection on Malawi’s creative landscape.

They say there are no coincidences in life, and truly, crossing paths with inspiring leaders and artists at this year’s UMP Festival felt purposeful. Every conversation became a class of its own, filled with lessons that continue to shape how we at Za Creative Consult envision creativity, innovation, and inclusion.

One memorable exchange was with Dr. Cranston Haankwenda, a visionary creative leader from Zambia, who reminded us not to “give away our power too easily.” He emphasized that growth happens through micro actions and that time is the most valuable resource we have. He also highlighted the importance of embracing technology: “If you’re not using AI, you’re not growing your brand.”

As Za Creative Consult, we were privileged to present possible solutions to increase women’s participation in the creative sector. Responding to the Department of Arts’ observation of low female representation, we emphasized the need for data-driven and needs-based interventions designed from the ground-up rather than imposed from the top. This aligns with our expertise in Gender Transformative Programming, where evidence and lived experiences guide innovation.

Additionally, we introduced Pamudzi Arts, one of our flagship projects working with talented youth from Area 25 in Lilongwe. The initiative focuses on training and creating market opportunities for young creatives at both national and regional levels.

This resonates with global efforts to utilize the creative and heritage industries as key drivers for socio-economic development, as underscored in the 2005 UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and Malawi 2063.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Department of Arts and UMP Festival organizers for this opportunity to share, connect, and learn. The experience reaffirmed our belief that creativity thrives where collaboration, inclusion, and innovation meet.
